“Carnival it is that springs this hill alive” – Earl Lovelace, The Dragon Can’t Dance (1979)
After a two-year long hiatus, Carnival is finally here. It is our yearly ritual of social unity, the event that recalls our country’s resistance to oppression.
Carnival is the performance of memory. It is the dance of history and rebellion that echoes the music of our accents and subsumes the dancers. It is freedom. As the premier state institution that strives to maintain the integrity of our nation, the Integrity Commission wishes to remind the nation that freedom must not be compromised by corrupt practices. In the spirit of Carnival, the Commission asks that our nation continue the same resistance to the practices of corrupt persons who act with impunity. We must carry on the tradition of resistance and resilience.
The Commission wishes everyone a safe and happy Carnival.
